The Frasers of Dores

and later of New Zealand

I received this note from Ross Fraser of New Zealand.  Please contact him if you have information on this family!

As I am always searching for more info on my ancestors suddenly today I come upon your website The Lost Families of Stratherrick, Strathnairn, and Dunmaglass, Inverness-shire, Scotland. I am the secretary/treasurer/newsletter editor of Clan Fraser Society of NZ & as a consequence am in frequent communication with Marie Fraser from Canada & was through searching via Electric Scotland / Canadian Explorer that I came upon your site wherein you mention Frasers & McTavishs of Stratherrick. I will wait to see if I get any response from you but in the meantime I attach a short resume for your information also note as follows from the 1851 Census – Fraser Mary Head F 52 Housekeeper Inverness-shire-Stratherrick. Mary was a McTavish born 2 Jan 1798 to Duncan McTavish & Isobel Fraser the actual place name on the OPR 096/A00 00100066 Dores is very hard to decipher.

My great grandfather, Simon was born 11 May 1840 in the parish of Croy and Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland. In 1869 he arrived in Dunedin and his occupation was listed as a labourer. In 1875 he married Catherine (Kate) Connors who was born in Limerick, Ireland about 1840. Simon and Catherine had three boys and a girl, Andrew born in 1877 married Gertrude Violet Wigg at St Stephens Parish, North Dunedin, the second was James Alexander (my grandfather) born in Dunedin 1879. He married Agnes Mabel Fleming of Crookston and they had four boys. James David born 13 June 1919 the eldest was my father and in 1946 married my mother Shirley Margaret Crawshaw. Catherine was born 1882 and died 1898 at age 16 and William was born 1883, I know nothing of William but I have a memory of my grandfather talking about a brother going to Canada chasing gold and was believed to have died in Canada.

The first Fraser relative that I can confirm is Robert Fraser who was born about 1767 in

Inverness-ire. He married Isabel McIntosh 1 December 1808. She was born about 1773 in Inverness-shire. Robert and Isabel had 8 children, 7 of whom are registered in the Dores OPR

Andrew and Mary had 11 children and three are known to have emigrated to Dunedin - William who was born 16 February 1829 and married Elizabeth Littlejohn Laing c. 1855, Mary born 27 October 1830 and my great grandfather Simon. Mary and Simon left Gravesend 2 June 1869 on the SS “William Davie” and arrived in Port Chalmers 9 September 1869 to join their brother William was the licensee of the Caledonian Hotel in Dunedin and later shifted to Auckland.
