I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT IT-I WAS HOPING THAT SOMEONE COULD HELP ME!
I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT TURNED UP IN A PLACE CALLED CARBRIDGE AND HAD A REAL SIVER 'TRIM '.
IT AROUSES MY CURIOSITY BECAUSE ITS CERTAINLY NOT SCOTTISH YET WAS CALLED THE MACTAVISH HORN. DO WE ASSUME IT CAME BACK FROM THE COLONIES; THE DESCRIPTION IVE BEEN GIVEN SOUNDS LIKE (FORGIVE MY NAIVITY) SOMETHING HAWKEYE WOULD CARRY! IT WAS SOLD AT THE INVERNESS AUCTION ROOMS AND IM TRYING TO TRACE THE BUYER....I THINK WE SHOULD OWN IT.

strangely enuf several years ago i was watching the antiques roadshow thing from u.s.a and up popped an old silver gun powder horn...it had name of mactavish engraved at a later date (suggested) but it was somehow agreed to have been connected to the fur company of simon mact and it went for HUGE dollars....along with a couple of engraved wooden pipes ....
the auctioneer said all things connected with the mw co and hudsin bay fur co were now extremely sort after and collectable...
the old gun powder may have been rammed into the mactavish rifles to stem the flow of murder set upon simons employess by alexr mackenzies men...
( i have uncovered a letter from mactavish which details alexr mackenzie men were sent in to the mactavish fur company fort and men were shot by mackenzies men.)
strangely enuf the letter asks for the matter to be "kept quit" and adds DISGUST that alexr mackenzie was looked upon as a "man of honour" ......so again we see simon mactavish being rediculed for his stand against his ex partner mackenzie but noone has bothered to note the fact simon was fighting a man willing to kill simons workers.....yet simons memory is tarnished due to simon standing strong againgst mackenzie...??? well at least simon didnt send men off to kill mackenzies men eh.???

well most likely there was a bit of killing back and forth between the two of them. It has always bothered me that MacKenzie managed to be Knighted.....but then again, he beat Lewis and Clark to the Pacific ocean by a couple of years.
I periodically have searched ebay for Northwest company items. I have found some trinkets, but anything of value goes for much more than I can afford. About six months ago, they were an original document bearing Simon's signature. I bid $500 for it, but it still was sold for more. There is a fan club for Simon, but it is small, but with passionate people.
Did you know that Simon is said to haunt the mansion in Montreal that he was building when he died.......................................It is still written about!

And this is another kind of "treasure" we store up. I just hope someday, my children will have such warm, fuzzy thoughts of me! I have such wonderful memories of my mum and dad. Wouldn't trade them for anything in the world - except to have them back.
My gran was "hell on wheels" and so far ahead of her time! She played the numbers (illegal then in her state), read "racey" books for the library so they would know whether people under 21 could read them, always smelled divine and always had chocolate in the house. And she cooked with real butter. Aren't those odd things to remember? But I always smile when I do.
And, like you, I don't think most people would describe me as sentimental......
