porridge is actually whats called oatmeal in the states but not as savoury. in gaelic its called mi'n pronounced meen and its just salt water and oatsboiled until soft.it wasalways eaten as a duty rather than a pleasure
i wasraised by my grandparents and i had golden syrup poured all over mine..a highland sacrilege!
note also that scots always eat porridge on a plate never a dish and its eaten from the outside(coolest) inwards
nice to hear from you packer

What IS it about SOS and men? You would think, after eating it in the military by necessity, that they would want to avoid it at all costs. It never appealed to me, that's for sure. Give me bacon and eggs!

Altho I have eaten decent powdered eggs - and NOT so decent! If you put enough salsa on them, they're edible. I don't think salsa could save SOS.

Now that is spoken like a true girl from Wisconsin.................

Wisconsin is known for it's dairy products, brats, and beer!

Brats, cheese and beer make a perfect combination for a fall afternoon, watching the Green Bay Packers play football.

Now, who knows what a Brat is????

REALMACTAVISH

a brat in u k is an unruly child is it same stateside?

cathy
08-11-2006, 01:23 PM
Well a brat is also a spoiled rotten kid in Wisconsin, but a brat is also something that is eaten. Wisconsin has a large german population, and these people came in droves in the late 1800's. They brought with them sausage making abilities. A brat is very tasty today, but is made with the intestines and all the little parts of a pigs that you really do not want to know about. The German term is Bratwurst, in Wisconsin it is a brat, and eaten with lots of beer. Proudly at football and baseball games and at family picnics. Wisconsin is probably the only place in the United States where this delcious sausage is produced and not many people are aware of it, if they have no ties to this area!

Come to Wisconsin, and I will put on the biggest bratfest that anyone has ever seen!

Packer71, do you know anything about Brats???

Cathy

packer71
08-11-2006, 01:44 PM
I do know a thing or two about brats! I used to be one...ha ha.

A Bratwurst is prounounced with (I think so, anyways) a 'short' A. The best way to cook them is to boil them in beer with sliced onions, and a stick of butter. After they have simmered for awhile, then you grill them outdoors until nicely browned. YUM.

Use a cheap beer though. Don't waste your good beer on the stovetop.

Wisconsin is full of German/Polish origins....not a ton of Scottish origins. I really stood out with a Scottish surname...not many of those where I come from!

Where I grew up also, it was pretty obvious we were Scottish. I grew up in the land of the Polish people. Weddings in those days were with Polka bands..........and always the beer!

McTavish is a rare name, and anything celtic was even more rare in the land of sky blue waters..............Wisconsin

And Packer71, I bet you were a brat.............and yep, I agree, you probably still are!!!   :D :D

now I am not sure who Packer71 is, but it is obvious we both have Wisconsin roots, and I know this forum is about Scotland, but I am having too much fun. Now those of you in the states who know anything about football understand this question, but

What is a cheesehead??

Who invented the name??

Where do 60,000 of them show up on a Sunday afternoon???

[B]i ate many bratwurst whie stationed in germany.usually after too many shnapps chasers. our regiment's 4 companies always tried to outdo each other for being the most outragous.of course my company(D) were usually the worst -or best. i cannot divulge what happened to the occassional bratwurst but i will tell you of one incident where in a plush hotel lobby we realized that if we stacked tables we could reach the overhead fans- huge propellor things. bets were taken as to who could stop a fan with his head. work hard- play hard!.
needless to say many were on a fizzer in front of C O that a m with huge lacerations to the forehead.all given V Cs(voluntary contribution/fines) ......happy days.

I do know what a cheesehead is. I am one, in fact. I do think you are wrong in one of your assessments, cathy.

You said, "Where do 60,000 of them show up on a Sunday afternoon???"

Personally I think that number is WAY understated. Where do 100,000 of them show up on Sunday afternoon is probably more like it!

Speaking of Brats, check this story out....this is big news here!

YES! in miami. its sort of like rugby for people who dont want to get hurt so they wear lots of body armour. i've played rugby at lower levels(winger) and tried to imagine asking the scots(some of our team players are 250-300 pounds of muscle) to wear helmets and pads ......can't see it ! it must be based on rugby.?????
i played volley ball for the army for a while and follow football(soccer) from a distance- i like the caley jags (inverness)

packer71

It is based on Rugby....my husband played rugby for 18 years. He played 8 man...tough sport. It wrecked his back something fierce! There was a team from Wales that came to town a few months back....they were beautiful to watch, and of course kicked the tar out of us. Those guys are tough you-know-whats!!!

Gosh - I'm lucky again. I'm Scots/Welsh, paddle brats (in Germany, they paddle them with a wooden paddle in a large tub with water and beer) in the country when they have a big "shindig." When I was there in the 70s, most Germans had never eaten sweet corn. They felt all corn was for livestock. Then, the base had an open house and air show and fixed brats, dogs, corn on the cob, corn dogs and barbecue and we converted a whole BUNCH to eating corn!

And the other football I really liked but can't get any more is Canadian. Only 3 downs and their field was 10 yards longer than ours. None of the huddling stuff - just go, go, go.

i dont eat sweetcorn myself i regard it as fishing bait! i flavour it with maple syrup or strawberry or anything sickly sweet.
