Name Change.

First of all Cathy, I wasn't sure where to put this as there is no groups for names, only places. So sorry if its in the wrong place.

I know there is a story where John Fraser/McTavish got into some trouble and changed his name, I have what I believe as to be him and his sister Mary Fraser (1716-1770) in my tree, and their parents John and Elizabeth Fraser, now from the information I got the son John his decendents are called McTavish I would like to sort this out, it is very confusing, should John be McTavish or Fraser, and his children? assuming I have it correct and his parents where Fraser and he changed to McTavish or are his parents McTavish and he changed to Fraser???????

I know exactly the confusion you are experiencing. My ancestor, John McTavish, also switched from Fraser to McTavish when it was convenient. He fought with Bonnie Prince Charles starting at Falkirk and ending at Culloden. It was especially then that he used the Fraser name, mostly I believe to confuse the British. Can you send me your family tree???? to cmctavish@gmail.com (cmctavish@gmail.com)?? Let me see if I can connect him with someone else in my data base!

I would assume, he was McTavish and changed to Fraser.

I have more generations if you want, but here it is plus a few generations either side

Donald Mcrobie Fraser and Katherine Fraser had John Fraser
Hugh Fraser and Unknown had Elizabeth Fraser

John Fraser and Elizabeth Fraser had John McTavish and Mary Fraser

John McTavish and Unknown had John McTavish (jnr) and Donald McTavish
Mary Fraser married John McTavish (jnr) (Aunt and Nephew) and had Ann McTavish

John McTavish (jnr) and Mary Fraser had Ann McTavish
Donald McTavish and Margaret Hale had Archibald McTavish
Ann McTavish and Donald Roy MacGillivray had Ann MacGillivray

also if anyone can help with Hugh Fraser that would be great, I don't have a spouse or any parents.
