Welcome!
My vision for this website and this discussion board, is to meet other people with ties to the Stratherrick, Strathnairn, and Dunmaglass area of Scotland. It is my nope that this will be a sounding board for historical and genealogical discussion about this area.
My Ancestors were the McTavish of Garthbeg family and the McGillivray family of Dalscoilt and Clovendale. These ancestors were the leading forces of the Fur Trade of North America!
I visited this area of Scotland last summer and am most proud to know that my roots are from this area of the Highlands!

Hello Cathy
Looks as if I may be the first to join. As you now I am researching MacTavish/McTavish/ McGilvray from Mull, John McTavish from Inverness. The Mull MacTavish is Archibald MacTavish (1711-1778) who married in 1742 Jean Campbell (1716-?1763) at Cruachan, Argyshire. I would be grateful for any information/suggestions about Archibald. I Have no idea of where he was born and who his parents were. He was a Minister in Salen (Torosay), Mull for nearly 40 years. His grandson John McTavish also became a Minister in Inverness as did some others in the family. I will send you what I have on the family soon.
My husband is descended from a Colin MacTavish and Catherine McGilvray who were married in Torosay 1808.
We live in Drymen which is a small village between Stirling and Glasgow in Scotland and about 10 min drive from Loch Lomond in what my husband calls "God's Country". I will be in touch soon.
Regards
Kirsten

I have been researching our family who arrived in New Zealand in 1864 from Stratherrick. We descend from Alexr James Mactavish born 1842 at Migovie (this particular alexr obviously did not die then as recorded in Mackenzies history of the frasers). This shows you should double check ALL information you find .....otherwise i would have assumed i was descended from a dead infant according to Mackenzie. Migovie was a farm that lay adjacent to the nearby Garthbeg farm. Alexr James was son of Alexr Mactavish (migovie) who was solicitor and magistrate of Inverness from 1839 until his death in 1855. He also had a prominant political career with the conservative party . This Alexr was son of Alexr Mactavish who was tacksman of nth Migovie and who died 1808. His date of birth and age at death are unkown at this stage ,however someone has incorrectly made an assumption he was son of Dugald Mactavish and Janet Fraser . This appears incorrect for many many reason...the most obvious being the fact Dugald Mactavish named another son Alexr in 1779....( the first must have died ? ) and my Alexr married in 1792 ...also the naming patterns of my Alexrs children have no indication of that parentage. His childrens names point out clearly he was a son of an Alexr and Elspett. Does anyone have any further comment or information that may assist with this dilemma.? My Alexr who died 1808 is also buried in the family plot at Boleskine right next to the other Garthbeg men...also indicating his close family ties.
I need more info on the life of this Alexr who married Christain Williamson in 1792
PLEASE EVERYONE SIGN IN AND POST IDEAS,COMMENTS,AND ANY FAMILY LEGEND AND STORIES....AS FROM THESE SNIPPETS THE PIECES WILL FALL INTO PLACE REGARDING THE LIVES OF OUR STRATHERRICK FAMILIES

great effort cathy,
lets hope you get many points of view and stories from all mactavish. Its great to see a site dedicated to the proud family traditions of mactavish and preserving all legend and stories no matter how trivial or controversal. We have to remember that everyone without exception who is of mactavish name and descent is a member of the mactavish clan by birth right.
Stand proud, stand strong, be as gracious in victory as you are in defeat, (legendary mactavish family saying )
cheers.....melissa
