MY ANCESTOR TAVISH MACTAVISH;WOUNDED AND CAPTURED AT CULLODEN,WAS TORTURED AT CARLISLE GAOL OVER THE WHEREABOUTS OF BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE. HE WAS LED TO THE SCAFFOLD AND FREED ON A WHIM FROM CUMBERLAND. THE STORY BEGS MANY QUESTIONS AND I'D WELCOME SENSIBLE INPUT.
COULD HE INDEED HAVE KNOWN THE PRINCES HIDING PLACE?HE WAS ONLY A LIEUTENANT.
THE PRINCE WAS HIDDEN BY CLUNY PHAIRSON AND THE MACPHERSONS WERE OUR HISTORICAL ENEMIES- COULD TAVISH BE PRIVY TO HIDE DESPITE FEUDAL ANIMOSITY ?
WHY DID THE ENEMY THINK TAVISH WOULD KNOW? ONLY A HANDFUL OF PRISONERS WERE TORTURED .
WHY WOULD CUMBERLAND GIVE TAVISH HIS FREEDOM FROM THE VERY STEPS OF THE SCAFFOLD; IT WAS CERTAINLY AGAINST HIS NATURE?

This makes a great story! Was this where Charlie hid in Stratherrick??? Or some where else. Is there anything else published on this?? I do know that John McTavish of Garthbeg was one of a handful of men NOT pardoned under the General pardon of 1747. I believe that Tavish was the first cousin of John of Garthbeg.

Is there anything published on this any where????

the fact is cathy that i dont know anything other than what my grandfather(who raised me) told me. he said hed been told by his grandfather and so on. tavish certainly existed; hes in our tree and bible. hes also in 'the muster roll of bonnie prince charlie' aberdeen university press. ive been to carlisle gaol/castle and no records were kept of those wicked days.
the fact isthat cluny phairson(mcpherson) hid charlie in a cave, can we assume that was on their clan lands?if so that would be very close to ours. but why would tavish have been privy to that information.?the clan mcpherson were our historical enemies; was there an armistace of jacobites?
