I have real confusion here. We all acknowledge and respect the historical allegiance of clan Fraser/Mactavish in Stratherrick. Why then does the Garthbeg Mactavish also have clear evidence of ties to clan Campbell ?
We have ancient family items that depict the Campbell crest and motto of "ne obliviscaris" This is found on an old signet ring that was used to press this seal into wax, we have this Campbell crest on an ancient firearm which displays these crests in gold and also displays the name of Mctavish clearly. We have legend of old ancient very heavy swords that displayed the same crest. We have E.N Elvins book of crests and mottoes that describes the Garthbeg Mactavish using the boars head and motto of "ne obliviscaris". ( i have yet to check this but have been informed of its mention ).
Did this all stem from Lachlan and Simons grant in 1793 and 1794 , or are these legends and items part of the reasoning and historical facts these 2 men used to make their application for arms confirming the Campbell connection in the first place. I have a letter from Simon to lachlan dated 18th dec 1792 in which Simon states ..." I know we are descended from the Campbells , but how far we use the same arms I am at a loss ".
It appears the actual boars head as used on our Strath items is slightly different to that of the Campbell.....our boars head doesnt appear to show the "tusks" that are clearly visible on the Campbell item....but I am unsure if this may be simply an engravers fault due to the difficulty in perhaps reproducing all the intricate detail in gold ???...but this difference is evident on all items...both silver and gold.
