Has anyone heard of something called Heather Gems? Is that a brand name, or is it a product?

HIYA Packer!
probably a bit of both really coz its specialised jewellery made from actual heather stems creating amazing colours and patterns ; theres a place at Loch Fyne which sells gorgeous earrings ,pendants and brooches made this way.
hope you'll be over soon for some celtic retail therapy!

The Scotsman (http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/s2.cfm?id=1004822002) does it much better than I can. But it's a braw place in the summer - that's July 27 to August 4, both dates inclusive - unless it's raining.
Here's a picture so you can have a wee look.

Well we have a Scottish beastie called a midgie which is a mozzie in disguise. There aren't so many of them in Aberdeen but when you get to the West of Scotland they are a real problem. They fly about in wee swarms and like to give you a bite or two.
My wife is allergic to insect bites and I always enjoy counting the bites on her face after a day in the Highlands. Citronella oil is the answer though.
